CBS News reports that a viral eye infection has infected 1,400 Americans, most of them women and children.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the virus has spread to 1,500 people, mostly in the Midwest and West.

The virus can cause serious complications including blindness, kidney damage and heart disease.CDC Director Tom Frieden said this week that the number of Americans infected so far is “very significant” and the virus is “extremely contagious.”

He says he thinks it’s “likely” the virus will continue to spread.

The infection has spread from the U.S. to more than 100 countries.

The CDC says it will ask the U,S.
