By Mike KriegerThe US government is banning the use of Bitcoin in the United States, according to the government’s cybersecurity advisory group.
The Department of Homeland Security issued a cybersecurity advisory Wednesday morning, saying Bitcoin mining was illegal under federal law.
The advisory also states that anyone who tries to use Bitcoin as a currency “is subject to criminal penalties.”
The advisory says that anyone using Bitcoin to buy goods and services must be a licensed vendor.
Bitcoin mining has long been controversial.
In 2014, the currency’s price plummeted after a Bitcoin exchange lost more than $400 million.
In August, the US Federal Reserve began to ban Bitcoin trading in its own money.
Last week, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee passed a bill that would ban Bitcoin exchanges and other virtual currency businesses.
